A SOFTWARE SOLUTION TO FIRE ARM INVENTORY
Celerant’s program speeds ATF queries by SLATON L. WHITE
Keeping track of firearms inventory is a time-consuming chore. And entering the data by hand in the "bound book" can lead to errors, the consequences of which can be serious when the ATF drops by for a compliance inspection. But software developed by Celerant Technology can ease the burden.
"When the ATF comes to your store, it’s as serious as an IRS audit", says Celerant account representative Gary Ellis. "An agent will want to see all of the activity for guns, those that have been sold as well as those on stock. If your system shows a gun in inventory, it better be there."
With Celerant’s ATF-approved report program, the retailer- or the ATF inspector- can pull information on any firearm the retailer had purchased and received. The inquiries can be selected by serial number, vendor, model, date of sale, date of receipt, customer name and the ATF NICS code assigned to every gun in the system.
"These multiple points of entry", Ellis says, "eliminate having to go through the ATF 4473 Forms one by one. It speeds up the process and is more accurate as well."
The Sports Center, a three-store sporting goods and firearm retail chain based in Natchez, Mississippi, uses the system to track and manage all firearm sales. "Celerant permits my store locations to have accurate inventory, with perfect tracking", says Wade Craig, the Sports Center’s owner. Craig says the system’s ability to quickly provide information for law enforcement officials is an added benefit.
One of the most valuable attributes of the tracking system is its ability to generate "flags" to help a retailer track inventory. For example, say you order six shotguns, but only five arrive. After the five have been scanned into the system, the program will produce a flag that lets you know you have an outstanding serial number.
The ATF tracking software is just one component of the system. It also includes point-of-sale and inventory-management software and handles warehouse, distribution-center, allocation, multi-channel/e-commerce/kiosk, data-mining and back-office functions in a single, integrated system.
The result is a system that gives retail businesses the tools they need to take command of their success. Booth #2208. (718-605-7733; celerant.com)
